Strabane

From an Irish word, An Srath Bán, meaning 'the white river-holm,' Strabane is situated within the former County Tyrone and is about a two-hour drive from Belfast. As of the 2011 census, Strabane had a population of approximately 13,100 people.

History

Strabane was originally home to the ancient O'Neill clan of Ulster. Scottish families settled the town in the 1600s, an action that preceded the Plantation of Ulster. In the 1920s, Strabane became a border town. Previously known as the eighth-worst place to live in the UK, Strabane today has become a bustling town thanks to its role as a market and employment center for both the old Strabane District and County Donegal.
