Newtownabbey

The Borough of Antrim-Newtownabbey, known as Newtownabbey, is a large town of about 274 square miles situated north of Belfast in Northern Ireland's County Antrim. The name Newtownabbey – which translates to "new town of the abbey" – was not the first choice. Over 200 names were considered before they decided on Newtownabbey. As of 2011, the population was at 65,500, but it might be closer to 85,000 today. It is part of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council.

History

An Act of Parliament formally established Newtownabbey on April 1, 1958, officially merging the seven towns. It brought the official motto "Septem in Uno Surgent," which means Seven Shall Arise as One.

Newtownabbey is the third-largest town in Northern Ireland - after Belfast and Londonderry - thanks to the seven historic towns and 20 other villages.

On April 1, 2015, the boroughs of Antrim and Newtownabbey were joined to form the Borough of Antrim and Newtownabbey with a total combined population of 138,567 people.
