Newry
A city in Northern Ireland known as the Gateway to the North, Newry is situated about 34 miles from Belfast and 67 miles from Dublin on the River Clanye dividing the co-existing counties of Down and Armagh. The city had a population of a little over 26,800 in the 2011 Census.
History
Newry was founded about 1144 on the Clanrye by St. Malachy. The town was the scene of numerous fights throughout history. It was frequently assaulted from the 13th to the 17th century as it lay in a gap between two hills. It was also burned by English king James II's troops in 1689. The opening of the Newry Canal in 1742 made the town an important trading center, and in the 19th century, it was a busy trading port with merchants, markets, and noisy city quays.
