Located directly southeast of Belfast, Castlereagh was a former district in Northern Ireland before merging with Lisburn City Council to form Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council in May 2015. Named after the word An Caisleán Riabhach, which means Grey Castle - reportedly a stone residence that was the stronghold of the Clandeboye O'Neills in the 16th century - Castlereagh has a population of 68,000 as of 2012.

The Grey Castle was reportedly constructed on a rath in the Castlereagh Hills by Aodh Flann O'Neill, a Clandeboye, in about 1350. In 1602, Conn O'Neill raided Belfast from the castle but was compelled to sell off the rest of his estate owing to enormous debts to Moyses Hill, a relative of the Marquesses of Downshire.

On 1 October 1973, Castlereagh was one of twenty-six established by merging some areas from 3 other districts: Castlereagh Rural District, Hillsborough Rural District, and North Down Rural District.
